Funding

Research in Universities and other qualifying research organisations in the UK is supported by the Office of Science & Technology, through the UK research councils. The two research councils with a remit for supporting design research, the AHRC and EPSRC, have each committed £3.25 million to fund the Designing for the 21st Century Initiative between Jan 2005 and Dec 2009. The total budget of £6.5 million has been split between three activities. £1 million has been used to support Phase 1 research cluster projects. £5.1 million has been used to support Phase 2 Research projects. £400,000 is being used to support the Initiative Director’s role and Initiative dissemination activities. An overview of activities and events supported by the Initiative is listed under news and events.

Both research councils welcome applications for design orientated research projects to their other schemes. These are very varied and develop on a continuous basis. For full details of other funding opportunities, selection & eligibility criteria and closing dates please see relevant websites.
